Meningococcal Vaccination
Meningococcal disease is a rare but life-threatening disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (also known as meningococcal bacteria).
Meningococcal disease commonly appears as an infection of the blood or an infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. The infection can develop quickly and can cause serious illness, lasting damage and death, therefore early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics is vital.
Immunisation is the best protection against meningococcal disease.
Please note: The Australian Government’s National Immunisation Program provides a free meningococcal vaccine to infants at 12 months of age.
The vaccine will cover the meningococcal strains A, C, W and Y. It is recommended that you speak with your Chemist King pharmacist or doctor prior to your appointment.
